One sisterly fight that is still vivid in my memory is The Great Towel Rack Incident of 1992 (My dates might be slightly off. It's all a blur.). We were having a solid fight. My parents weren't home. There was scratching, hair pulling, screaming. There might have been blood shed. I can't remember.
The chasing led to the bathroom. I was the chase-ee (Again. I'm the victim here!). She was pulling me around my waist & to avoid being dragged to what was sure to be severe corporal punishment for whatever I had allegedly done, I grabbed on to the towel rack. It didn't take much. The stinkin' thing came right off the wall. The screaming immediately stopped and we stared at each other, me with the rack in my hand and dry wall dust on the floor. We both had the nervous laugh/uh oh/mom's gonna kill us moment. After a time of great division, my sister and I were once again an "us."
Nothing will squash a fight between siblings faster than the threat of mom and dad. Two kids might be as different as night and day, but they'll agree that the curfew is unfair or that dad's pants are so lame. My mom was an only child and she always told us how lucky we were to have each other. Now I couldn't agree more.
How do you settle fights between your kids? Here are some suggestions from iMom.
Me and my big sis' with her two who will surely form a united front! |
Abbey, I love that your sister listens to you on the air and texts you when she disagrees with you. It's awesome that you have that with her now. I remember getting into a couple of real throw-downs with my two sisters (not at the same time) and yes! The details get fuzzy, don't they? Both sisters are in Heaven now. Your mom is (was) right, of course. You are (were) lucky to have each other. I was lucky to have mine for the time that I did.

Is this Diego & Hannah's mom, Heidi? Either way, you're right. We are lucky. I'm sorry to hear about the loss of your sisters. That's terrible. But imagine the great chats you'll have again some day!
DeleteHi! Yes, it's me, of Diego and Hannah fame! The huge fan of the Friday Morning Weekend Kick Off MCHammer Time! The constant caller with comments and song requests! Thank you for the MCHammer shimmy this morning (last week I was dancing so much I missed my turn in traffic and had to go "round the mulberry bush"!) and the way you worked in our song request (God's Not Dead) while simultaneously playing the lyrics game for the giveaway this morning... was MASTERFUL!! Now, if only we'd RECOGNIZED the lyric! You would think we would have, since we requested the song! *heavy sigh* The kids and I are always sitting in the jeep in the car line guessing like crazy during Celebrity Birthdays (Diego guesses even though he doesn't know most of them!) and loving the veggie before they hop out. You guys are so great - I have never felt so connected to a radio station before in my life. The kids leave their radios on SpiritFM all night long. I enjoy you and "Nando" most of all (ask him if that's a nickname... I bet it is!). I felt his pain when you were playing all the voicemail messages he'd left for you... LOL! So funny! Love you guys!

Don't tell him I told you, but his family calls him, "Nandy". Ha!
DeleteSo funny! Have a great weekend!

I am glad my good name could be cleared. And, come on, I'm a mom...I hear EVERYTHING. :) Mark and I always knew we wanted two kids. And even after everything that happened when Maddy was born, we were still happy (albeit shocked and not quite ready) when we found out we were having Nolan. The greatest gift my parents gave me was you and I am happy to have been able to give that same gift to my kids. Now, God, please let this be it or I think I might die.
